Essentials & Etiquette
Is Mexico City good for vegetarians and vegans?

The stereotype that Mexican food is meat-heavy misses how many of the great dishes are corn, bean, chile, and squash based to begin with. CDMX in particular is one of the easier Latin American capitals for plant-based eating in 2026.
Classic dishes that are already vegetarian or vegan
Tlacoyos (thick corn masa cakes with beans or fava filling), quesadillas de flor de calabaza or huitlacoche, enfrijoladas, sopa de tortilla (ask for it without cheese/crema for vegan), elote / esquites, chiles rellenos (cheese-stuffed — vegetarian).
Dedicated plant-based restaurants
Ojo de Agua — chain, reliable, wide vegan and vegetarian range. Vegamo in Roma — fully vegan. Por Siempre Vegana Taquería — vegan taco stand with genuinely good al pastor made from seitan.
Fine-dining options
Both Pujol and Quintonil offer full vegetarian tasting menus with 48 hours notice. Rosetta has strong vegetarian pasta and vegetable dishes on the standard menu.
Words to know
Sin carne (without meat), soy vegetariano/a (I'm vegetarian), soy vegano/a (I'm vegan), sin queso (without cheese), sin crema (without crema). Ask specifically about lard (manteca) — some traditional bean dishes are cooked with it.
Frequently asked
Quick answers
Can vegans eat Mexican food?
+
Yes, and easily in CDMX. Corn, beans, squash, chiles, nopales, and huitlacoche are the base of much of Mexican cuisine. The main things to watch for are lard (manteca) in beans and dairy in unexpected places (crema on soups, cheese sprinkled on things by default).
Are refried beans vegan in Mexico?
+
Not always. Traditional frijoles refritos are often cooked with pork lard (manteca). Ask ¿los frijoles tienen manteca? Vegan restaurants and many modern cafés use oil instead.
