Mercado San Juan (officially Mercado San Juan Pugibet) is where chefs from the top restaurants in the city buy their game, seafood, and cheese. For a visitor, it is one of the best two-hour food experiences in CDMX.

What to look for

La Jersey — the cheese counter, a full deli with imported and Mexican artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and one of the best sandwiches (baguette al gusto) in the city.

Deli Caseus — another strong cheese and charcuterie stall, more focused selection.

Exotic meats stalls — venison, ostrich, wild boar, iguana. Sample carefully and know that some of what is sold is legally regulated.

Seafood section at the back — fresh whole fish, oysters shucked to order, ceviche stands.

How to do it

Go hungry. Start at La Jersey with a small plate of cheeses and a glass of wine (they pour). Walk the seafood section. Finish at a stall doing ceviche or aguachile. Two hours end to end.
